Abstract:Associate Professor Nicole Kessissoglou is visiting Shanghai Jiao Tong University with the aim to develop collaborative research projects. Her presentation will briefly describe an overview of the University of New South Wales and the research activities within the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. Nicole Kessissoglou established the Vibration and Acoustics research group at UNSW which consists of 2 postdoctoral research officers, 5 current PhD students and has graduated 8 PhD students, all on topics related to acoustics, vibration and their control. She will give an overview of the research projects in the Vibration and Acoustics group, which are mainly focused on developing analytical and numerical models to predict the vibro-acoustic responses of an underwater vehicle.

Speaker Biography:A.P.Nicole Kessissoglou

Obtained her PhD from the University of Western Australia.Joined the University of New South Wales in 2003.Be an Associate Professor since 2011. Authored and co-authored more than 200 journal and conference papers.
Member of:  Acoustical Society of America;  International Institute of AcousticsVibration;
             Australian Acoustical Society.
Research:   Passive and active noise and vibration control; Fluid-structure interaction,
             Numerical finite element/boundary element modelling,
             Mid and high frequency analysis of structures with uncertainties; Flow induced noise.

 

 

Subject:Numerical models for radiated sound from underwater vehicles

Abstract:A fully coupled numerical model of a shell submerged in a heavy fluid is presented. The shell is modelled using finite elements and the fluid is modelled using boundary elements. A two way coupling method is implemented to represent the interaction between the shell and the fluid. Based on this fully coupled model, a modal decomposition method is introduced, which allows to predict the contributions of fluid-loaded structural modes to the total radiated sound power. The fully coupled finite element/boundary element model is further applied to investigate the effects of the internal mass and buoyancy distribution of a submerged cylinder. Current research activities corresponding to (i) vorticity induced vibrations of a flexible structure in flow, (ii) airborne sound sources in submerged shells, and (iii) sound radiation from double hullsare briefly described.

Speaker Biography:Dr.Herwig Peters

Senior research officer at the University of New South Wales, Australia.
Obtained his Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Dresden University of Technology. During his Masters degree he studied at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Commenced his PhD in the Vibration and Acoustics Group at UNSW in 2010.
His PhD focused on acoustic-structure interaction of elastic shells submerged in a heavy fluid and the application of fully coupled finite element/boundary element models.
In his current position, Herwig is extending the models to consider internal airborne sound sources and double hulls. He is also working on flow induced noise problems to consider the interaction of elastic structures with their wake vortices.
